The Healing Power of Choral Music

I have run across stories, from time to time, on the amazing power of the arts to renew those who are closed off or in emotional or physical difficulties in some way.  The MCE Chamber Singers experienced that power just a couple of weeks ago.

Recently we sang short performances at two elder-care facilities on the same day, one at a fairly large nursing/rehab facility, the other at a very small home that takes care of perhaps six or seven disabled residents.  Most were in wheelchairs, and many had health issues that affected their attention.  But nearly all were “with” us to the best of their ability as we sang, even singing along with or mouthing the words to songs that they knew.

Most touching of all was a response we heard about afterwards concerning one of the residents of the smaller place.  She is a woman who apparently says little beyond “yes” or “no” in answer to questions, but when she was asked if she enjoyed the performance, she said more than “yes” or “no.”  She said, “It was wonderful;” a short response perhaps, but one that speaks loads concerning the power of singing to touch the mind and the heart.

Since we are a concert choir we don’t often sing at facilities like these.  But as we exchanged comments and observations at the next rehearsal, all of the singers noted how deeply satisfying it was to sing for the residents.  It was a renewal for us as well as many of them.

The power flowed both ways!
